Thoughtful design wins the business

According to Norjen Plant Hire LLP of Witton, Birmingham the thought that has gone into the design of the Volvo EC140C was the deciding factor in their decision to purchase.

"Volvo has really thought about the operator with the EC140C," declares Norjen's Plant Manager George Burns. "Not only is the cab spacious and comfortable, the service access to the main elements of the machine is exceptional in terms of ensuring the individual's safety," he continued citing the design of the access steps directly mounted behind the cab. This was the deciding factor in Norjen's purchase decision after trialling the fourteen tonne Volvo offering against the competition. The Company, although not total strangers to the Volvo brand, having taken delivery of the larger EC210C in 2008, decided from the results of the evaluation to extend that experience with three new EC140C's. "Besides the comfort and safety aspects, the machines are well built, perform very well and have a good specification," said Mr Burns.

Launched in 2008 the EC140C completes the line up of Volvo's C series crawler and wheeled excavators all featuring Tier III low emission engines. The installed power of the 4 cylinder engine found on the EC140C is 94hp which contributes to an excellent performance being well matched to the machine's hydraulics. The machine's 'Integrated work mode control' provides high efficiency, rapid dig cycles and low fuel consumption. This advanced mode control system ensures the maximum possible hydraulic horsepower available is delivered at a constant engine speed under varying load conditions. In addition, boom and arm geometry provide highly competitive digging forces and lifting capacities, which makes for faster work cycles. Hose rupture valves are fitted as standard to the boom and dipper cylinders as are quick fit hydraulics and a hammer/shear service.

Operator comfort was one of the determining factors in choosing the new Volvo excavators especially since each machine is allocated to a specific operator. The Volvo Care Cab offers a large roomy interior with plenty of leg room and foot space. The excellent all round visibility is enhanced by pressurized and filtered cab air supplied by a 14 vent, climate control system. An adjustable easy to read LCD colour monitor provides real time information of the machine functions, important diagnostic information and a wide variety of work tool settings. The monitor also doubles as a monitor for the rear view camera. In addition the new EC140C's have been supplied with the Volvo Caretrack telematics system and Volvo 'Blue' service agreements. CareTrack provides operational data remotely via the internet, including fuel consumption and idle time, all helping to reduce cost of ownership and maximise utilisation.

The new machines will be deployed on regular contracts and projects undertaken by Norjen's affiliated company, the Parkstone Group. They join an existing fleet of about thirty five excavators ranging from 3 to 36 tonnes as well as other associated plant such as site dumpers, crushers, screens and loading shovels as well as site accommodation and supporting plant and equipment.

Volvo Construction Equipment Ltd market wheeled loaders, articulated haulers, hydraulic excavators, graders, Volvo Compact Equipment and Volvo road machinery products. Nine strategically placed customer support centres and a network of compact equipment dealers ensure high quality customer support throughout Great Britain.
