Banks Mining, a division of the Banks Group Ltd, Ferryhill, County Durham has renewed an association with Volvo articulated haulers with the delivery of two A40E coal haulers.
The two new trucks have been delivered to Banks Mining's Shotton Surface Mine near Cramlington, one of the largest approved coal mines sites currently operating in the UK, and are part of an up-grade to Banks' existing fleet. Fitted with optional bolt-on 850mm side extensions and full tailgates, the trucks are capable of hauling a nominal payload of 38 tonnes of coal contributing to an overall production of up to 15000 tonnes per week at the Cramlington site.
Although the two new arrivals are running with similar sized trucks of different manufacture, they are not the first Volvo articulated haulers to be acquired by the Banks Group. "We experienced our first Volvo machine's back in 1994 purchasing A35 and A25 models which have since given a high level of availability and reliability," commented Banks Mining's Managing Director, Steven Harrison. "The trucks are equally much appreciated by our operators for their comfort, visibility and quality of ride and by our maintenance personnel for their ease of servicing - features which are made even more acceptable with the latest models from Volvo," he continued. The two A40E's offer Banks the added flexibility of being able to be converted back to standard configuration when needed for overburden removal and site stripping.
The Volvo A40E is equipped with a Volvo 16-litre turbo-charged high-performance low emission diesel engine developing 471 net hp and develops high torque at low engine speed. This is an important feature when starting from a standstill, making the hauler easy to manoeuvre in difficult terrain. The machine has all-wheel drive and 100% differential-locks, giving the operator many driving options. The hauler can go practically anywhere, economically and efficiently. The entire drivetrain - engine, transmission, dropbox and axles - is made up of Volvo components. Besides the larger 16 litre engine, the A40E benefits from a nine speed forward and three speed reverse transmission and a design of drop box eliminating the need for high and low ratio speeds. Retardation is achieved through the machine's service brakes rather than the transmission.
The dump body has a standard load capacity of 39000kg with an 18.8m³ heaped SAE 2:1 volume with the full tailgate fitted and is constructed with 400HB steel throughout providing both high yield and tensile strength. When fitted with the optional 850mm side extensions for light materials applications, the heaped body capacity increases to 42.3m³. A unique feature is the patented Volvo Load and Dump Brake. When the hauler is in position for loading or dumping, the operator presses a button to automatically apply the brakes and place the transmission in neutral. This improves safety and minimizes wear on the brakes and drivetrain. Once loading or dumping has been completed, the operator selects a gear and the Load and Dump Brake is disengaged.
In addition to the optional side extensions, the two A40E's supplied to Banks Mining have been fitted with external seat belt warning beacons, Kidde fire suppression systems and Volvo 'Caretrack Advanced' Telematics. CareTrack provides operational data remotely via the internet, including fuel consumption and idle time, all helping to reduce cost of ownership and maximise utilisation.
