BT Jenkins opts for Volvo once again

Earthmoving and Plant Hire Contractors, B T Jenkins of Clyst St Mary, Exeter has upsized and expanded its fleet of machinery once again by taking delivery of a new Volvo EC160CLC and an EC240CLC, along with two A25E articulated haulers from Volvo Construction Equipment.

Having taken one of the first B series EC160's launched onto the market in 2003, BT Jenkins has replaced the machine with the latest C series sixteen tonne model along with a larger twenty four tonne EC240C - again replacing a B version delivered in 2005. After sales support and back up along with good reliability of the products themselves prompted Managing Director Rob Butcher to opt for Volvo one again. "We really cannot fault Volvo for their back up, the productivity of their excavator product and good residual values," he commented. "In addition, our operators appreciate the comfortable cabs on the latest C range models."

Volvo C series excavators are powered by Volvo Tier III low-emission engines which contribute to an excellent performance and are well matched to the machine's hydraulics providing high efficiency, rapid dig cycles and low fuel consumption. An advanced mode control system ensures the maximum possible hydraulic horsepower available is delivered at a constant engine speed under varying load conditions. In addition, boom and arm geometry provide highly competitive digging forces and lifting capacities, which makes for faster work cycles. Hose rupture valves are fitted as standard to the boom and dipper cylinders as are quick fit hydraulics and a hammer/shear service.

Monitoring of the machine's vital functions and whereabouts has been enhanced by the fitting of Volvo's optional CareTrack telematics system on these latest additions, which, in the opinion of Rob Butcher, is an important innovative feature for managing BT Jenkins' plant fleet. CareTrack provides operational data remotely via the internet, including fuel consumption and idle time, all helping to reduce cost of ownership and maximise utilisation.

In addition to the two new excavators, BT Jenkins has taken delivery of two new A25E articulated haulers which join a D model purchased two years ago. The Volvo A25E is equipped with a Volvo 9-litre turbo-charged high-performance low emission diesel engine developing 305 net hp and develops high torque at low engine speed. This is an important feature when starting from a standstill, making the hauler easy to manoeuvre in difficult terrain. The machine has all-wheel drive and 100% differential-locks, giving the operator many driving options. The hauler can go practically anywhere, economically and efficiently. The entire drivetrain - engine, transmission, dropbox and axles - is made up of Volvo components.

The dump body has a load capacity of 24000kg with a 15cu.m heaped SAE 2:1 volume and is constructed with 400HB steel throughout providing both high yield and tensile strength. A unique feature is the patented Volvo Load and Dump Brake. When the hauler is in position for loading or dumping, the operator presses a button to automatically apply the brakes and place the transmission in neutral. This improves safety and minimizes wear on the brakes and drivetrain. Once loading or dumping has been completed, the operator selects a gear and the Load and Dump Brake is disengaged.
