Operator satisfaction prompts repeat business from Bathgate Silica Sand
A brand new Volvo L220F loading shovel has been delivered to Bathgate Silica Sand, Arclid, Cheshire and takes over as the prime mover at the Company's quarry extracting high quality silica sand for a variety of specialist markets.
The new 32 tonne loading shovel continues a trend at Bathgate Silica Sand, replacing the original L220E that was delivered in 2003 and joins a second E model delivered in 2005. Operator preference, together with Volvo's track record for after market support were the main drivers in determining the choice of the new replacement machine according to Bathgate's General Manager Dave Robinson. "There's no doubt my operators favour the Volvo product, especially now with the enhancements to the cab of the F series machine in terms of added comfort and increased visibility," he said. "This time around though, we've decided to invest in Volvo's Gold Service Agreement for complete peace of mind."
The L220F is powered by a Tier III 12 litre Volvo engine developing 352 hp at just 1400rpm. The Tier III/Stage 3 low emission engine delivers high torque at just above tick over, giving the new loaders excellent rimpull and low fuel consumption as well as a significant reduction in noise levels of the E series machine. Much effort has been expended to increase mid-range torque; giving better operability in the most economic engine speed range. One practical consequence of this increase in horsepower is better pile penetration and fuller buckets. For improved operator comfort, oil-filled clutches and a Pulse-Width Modulation Valve in the transmission allow smoother shifting and minimize jolting when changing between gears. The transmission is also significantly quieter than its predecessor, and maximum speed has also been increased. The fact that all major components of the driveline (engine, transmission, axles) are designed and built by Volvo means that they work in harmony, in terms of performance, reliability and also fuel efficiency.
And assisting the machine to easily produce around 2000 tonnes of material per day at Bathgate, the L220F has been fitted with a 5.4m³ straight lipped bucket, Volvo's optional ride control or boom suspension system together with Goodyear 29.5 x 25 TL3A tyres. So configured the new arrival is capable of extracting from the face and carrying bucket loads of up to eleven tonnes on one way hauls of up to 400 metres to field hoppers, strategically placed in the quarry feeding a conveyor system.
Opting for Volvo's Gold Service Agreement is a new departure for Bathgate Silica Sand in so much that instead of the normal service agreements the Company has entered into in the past, the Gold Agreement is a complete Repair and Maintenance package. The agreement covers all servicing including oils, filters and associated parts, labour travel and mileage together with breakdowns and repairs up to a period of 10000 hours or forty eight months. This follows a similar arrangement the Company recently undertook with Volvo Trucks for its road fleet. "In the current environment we decided to opt for a package that gave complete peace of mind with the sure knowledge that we can clearly manage the operating budget for the machine," said Dave Robinson.
