Another Volvo moves in at Tong Farm

Sound performance and reliability has prompted Tong Farm Quarry to purchase a third excavator for its operations near Bacup, Lancashire from Volvo Construction Equipment.

Located on top of the Lancashire fells and close to the town of Bacup, lies Tong Farm Quarry. Originally the site was a clay pit with clay being extracted for a local factory manufacturing drainage pipes, but as the excavations went deeper, clay gave way to shale. The task of extracting and processing the material from situ has been carried out by a thirty six tonne Volvo EC360B and a larger EC460B. "We bought the EC360B two years ago from new and acquired the forty six tonne machine privately replacing an old Samsung machine," explained Proprietor Jim Laycock. "Both machines have performed very well indeed and as we needed to increase our production decided on purchasing another Volvo to look after the processing side leaving the larger machines purely on extraction."

With both the existing machines left in charge of the primary extraction the new twenty nine tonne EC290C has been deployed feeding material through the plant for sizing and screening. The new comer is powered by a 7 litre Volvo Tier III low emission engine developing 195 net hp. Coupled to the innovative "Integrated work mode control" hydraulic system the machine delivers high productivity, high digging capacity precision and above all excellent fuel economy. This advanced mode control system ensures the maximum possible hydraulic horsepower available is delivered at a constant engine speed under varying load conditions. In addition, boom and arm geometry provide highly competitive digging forces and lifting capacities, which makes for faster work cycles. Hose rupture valves are fitted as standard to the boom and dipper cylinders as are quick fit hydraulics and a hammer/shear service.

The Volvo Care Cab offers a large roomy interior with plenty of leg room and foot space. The excellent all round visibility is enhanced by pressurized and filtered cab air supplied by a 14 vent, climate control system. An adjustable easy to read LCD colour monitor provides real time information of the machine functions, important diagnostic information and a wide variety of work tool settings. The monitor also doubles as a monitor for the rear view camera.

The new EC290C has been supplied with a Volvo Blue Service agreement ensuring peace of mind for Tong Farm Quarry with the machine being serviced and maintained by qualified Volvo service engineers with genuine Volvo parts.
