Ceannacroc Estates, located to the north west of Fort Augustus in the Highlands of Scotland, has just taken delivery of a Volvo ECR88 Plus reduced swing compact excavator for its road building and maintenance programme.
Replacing a Volvo EC55B which was ordered at Scot Plant 2004, the ECR88 Plus was chosen thanks to the reliability and good availability of its predecessor. "I've been delighted with the EC55B but this time around decided on the larger machine to give that bit extra in terms of reach and power," explained Proprietor Martin Girvan. And the new ECR88 Plus, ordered at this year's Scot Plant exhibition takes over the building and maintenance of the roads and tracks on Mr Girvan's 14,500 acre estate. Working as far away as ten miles from the Estate's headquarters the machine is used to construct new access roads on virgin ground. "Some of the terrain is quite tricky to deal with ranging from shale and rock to boggy peat," continued Mr Girvan. "Our new ECR88 is able to tackle the job with ease as we get further and higher into the Estate."
The new Volvo ECR88 PLUS is powered by a Volvo 3.4 litre low emission engine producing 57 net hp coupled to a load sensing hydraulic system for fast cycle times and smooth control. The machine, offering an impressive ground reach of 7.39m and a lifting capacity of 960kg at full reach across carriage, plus the additional operating weight of just under 9 tonnes were some of the factors in Martin Girvan's decision to opt for the larger machine. Operator comfort was also a deciding factor. The ECR88 Plus has a comfortable, spacious cab with a wide uncluttered floor. The instrument panel provides operators with at-a-glance monitoring of all key functions and operator fatigue is reduced through easy-grip, high response joystick control levers. The rubber-mounted cabs reduce whole-body vibration, and external noise minimizing the rigors of the jobsite whilst air conditioning with well positioned vents is a standard feature.
Besides the road building programme, the new ECR88 Plus will also be deployed in 'mounding' operations for new forest plantations on the Ceannacroc Estate.
