Volvo BL61 – a 1st for W & G Owen

W & G Owen of Criccieth has opted for a Volvo BL61 Plus.

Breaking with tradition, W & G Owen of Criccieth North Wales has opted for a Volvo BL61 Plus for its farming and leisure activities.

Not only is the BL61 Plus the first Volvo branded product purchased by this family run business, it is also the first piece of Volvo Construction Equipment retailed by Volvo’s new compact dealer for North Wales – Griffith A’I Gwmni Cyf. And based on the knowledge that Griffith was about to be appointed as Volvo’s dealer prompted the father and son team to place their order for a replacement backhoe loader with them. “Although we bought the Volvo on specification, we’ve been really pleased with the machine’s performance, especially the front loader’s digging power,” commented Mr Owen.

The BL61 Plus with powershift transmission is powered by a Volvo 4 cylinder low emission engine developing 91 nett hp. The carefully matched drive train provides high fuel efficiency and in addition, a fuel tank of 120 litres capacity keeps the BL61 working longer between top ups.

The box-welded front loading arms are shaped to follow the line of the engine cover for good visibility, while its self levelling system (with ‘float’ and ‘return to dig’ modes) allows the operator to concentrate on machine positioning. The loader’s fixed flow hydraulic system also provides rapid cycle times. The centre mounted bucket cylinder also affords the operator a high degree of visibility at the bucket end and due to how it is mounted, provides optimum digging power.

The loader frame comes with an integral safety strut and either a 1.0m³ general purpose or multi purpose (four in one) bucket is offered. A fork kit for handling pallets is also available and W & G Owen has opted for a front end quick hitch to be able to swap from bucket to pallet forks quickly.

The loader arm has a lift capacity of 2992kg while bucket breakout force is a generous 49.6 kN. At the rear of the machine, the side shifting backacter follows the same design as the larger BL71 and retains the hydraulic boom lock and manual swing locking pin. The swing post is made from cast iron and there is an extendible dipper option, which increases reach by 990 mm. The standard dipper uses a 0.21 m3 bucket, has a digging force of 53 kN and can dig down to 4.3 m (extending to 5.37 m with the longer dipper arm). A hydraulic or mechanical quick hitch attachment bracket is available for rapid tool changing, and the operator can choose between traditional backhoe levers – or controls similar to those found on excavators. The backhoe cylinders are cushioned to eliminate jolting and the rigid hydraulic lines are cleanly routed inside the boom.

W & G Owen combine their 500 acre cattle and sheep farming business with the leisure industry operating a static and touring caravan park on the outskirts of Criccieth, North Wales. Their new BL61 is deployed on both the farm and general maintenance on the park as well as undertaking small local contracts.

Griffith A’I Gwmni Cyf is Volvo’s compact equipment dealer for North Wales offering the full range of Volvo compact excavators, compact loaders and backhoe loaders.
