Postcard from Talybont...

E G Evans & Sons Ltd, takes delivery of the first Volvo EC35C compact excavator.

E G Evans & Sons Ltd, of Talybont near Barmouth, North Wales has taken delivery of the first Volvo EC35C compact excavator to be retailed in Great Britain.

The three and a half tonne mini excavator which first previewed at this year's SED exhibition back in May has gone to work for the family run business now celebrating its fiftieth year. The EC35C's prime function, replacing a seven year old competitive model will be in maintaining and developing the Islawrffordd caravan park as well as external contracts undertaken by E. G Evans & Sons. Choosing the new model from Volvo coincided with the appointment of Griffith A'I Gwmni Cyf as Volvo's compact equipment dealer for North Wales. "We were looking to change our old machine and already had an association with Arwel Griffith," explained Co Director Dylan Evans. "We took an immediate liking to the EC35C especially the ease of entry and exit from the cab and decided there and then to take the machine," he continued. "And we haven't been disappointed with our decision. The machine has plenty of reach, it's highly manoeuvrable and is smooth to operate and control."

The Volvo EC35C compact excavator features a conventional excavator design for exceptional stability along with minimal superstructure swing. It is powered by a new-generation Volvo 4 cylinder diesel engine developing 36 hp for dependable performance, exceptional fuel efficiency and low emissions/noise. New styling around the superstructure is enhanced by Volvo's new industry-leading comfortable cab offering minimum fatigue with the best possible leg and foot room - a feature that was a crucial deciding factor in Mr Evans' decision to the purchase the machine. Simultaneous control of the slew and offset movements provides a fast and precise performance. The floating blade feature allows for quick and easy backfilling, levelling and finish work. This coupled to an angling bucket supplied with the machine has proved invaluable working on grassed areas around the Islawrffordd site. The joystick control lever comes with an electronically proportional roller, allowing the operator to accurately adjust hydraulic flow as needed. The automatic two-speed travel system engages at high speeds, automatically shifting gear from high to low according to the travel load. The Volvo-patented mono pump hydraulic system efficiently uses one system for all hydraulics, delivering precise control and ideal power.

The cab on the EC35C comes standard with FOPS 1, ROPS and TOPS safety structures to help prevent injury and visibility around the machines is very good due to expansive glass, narrow cab pillars and a compact rear design. Retractable seat belts securely fit operators of all sizes and the large one-piece floor is easy to clean. The instrument panel provides operators with at-a-glance monitoring of all key functions.

Whilst the majority of the infrastructure for the Islawrffordd Caravan Park has been installed, i.e. mains drainage, gas pipe, telecom, water and power lines, the EC35C has also been purchased for contracts undertaken by Evans and Sons on other independent sites. "With the experience and expertise in developing our own static and touring site of around 20 acres with 200 static vans, we actively offer our services to other parks in the North Wales locality of which the machine plays a key factor," commented Mr Evans.
