Castle Plant has taken delivery of a new Volvo EC160CLC excavator for its contracting activities on Royal Deeside.
Castle Plant (Deeside Ltd), Plant Hire Contractors to Her Majesty the Queen, has taken delivery of a new Volvo EC160CLC excavator for its contracting activities in and around the Balmoral Estate on Royal Deeside.
Based in the village of Ballater close to Balmoral, Castle Plant (Deeside Ltd) is run by father and son team Ian and James Cameron who specialise in groundworks contracts, forestry and general maintenance of roads and tracks in and around the locality. The company celebrates fifteen years of working on the Royal estate of Balmoral and proudly displays the Royal seal of appointment on its equipment.
Although the recently delivered EC160C is Castle Plant's first Volvo excavator, Ian Cameron is no stranger to Volvo products, having taken delivery of one of the first 861 articulated haulers to be delivered in the north of Scotland some twenty five years ago. "We purchased the new machine based on the strong reliability and longevity of service we've enjoyed from our old Volvo and so believe we are investing in another quality product," commented Ian Cameron. "Besides, the machine is also well specified as standard and the weight and width of the machine is ideal for the typical jobs we carry out."
Installed with the new Tier III compliant Volvo D6 engine developing 118 net hp, the machine offers high torque at low rpm, leading to ultra-efficient fuel consumption. The engine is impossible to stall as the onboard computer balances maximum available power to hydraulic output, preventing the engine from becoming overloaded (regardless of engine speed or pump demand). The total operating weight is 17.3 tonnes and with a width of just 2.9m on 700mm track pads the EC160C is ideal for working on narrow and weak bridges (of which there are many in and around the Balmoral Estate.)
The new C series excavators from Volvo offer a larger Care Cab providing more room for the operator. Visibility has also much improved over the B model - especially upper and lower visibility in the operator's field of view. A Multi-adjustable seat, pedals and joystick offer the perfect operating position and the enhanced suspension system surpasses emerging cab vibration requirements, reducing operator fatigue and whole body vibration. A new colour LCD display is easy to read, also in very bright conditions and offers real time information. The new cab on the C series machine has also met the approval of Ian Cameron's son James who operates the machine, citing it as the most comfortable and operator friendly machine he has driven.
